ENG 4380 (Field Experience) consists of cooperative and internship opportunities providing students with the opportunity to integrate theoretical concepts learned in the classroom with practical, supervised experience gained on the job or performing tasks for the university community.
English 4380 Prerequisites
The prerequisites for enrollment in English 4380 are as follows:
- 60 or more credit hours completed
- Completion of English 3304 and English 3331
- Departmental permission for enrollment
Internship Application Process
Students first must contact Dr. Ann Jennings at South 1045 (713-221-8453 or jenningsa@uhd.edu) for a) approval to register in English 4380 and b) approval of a internship application. Students must then register in English 4380 in person at The Office of Records, North 327 (no phone registration is available).
To qualify for internships made available university-wide to UH-D students by local businesses and community organizations, students must pick up a field experience packet from Career Services at North 370. Students must complete the following steps:
- Complete your resume on the Resume Expert Diskette
- Complete the Field Experience Interest Card
- Meet with Cynthia Jackson, Field Experience Coordinator in Counseling and Career Services, to have your resume reviewed, to submit your Field Experience Interest card and to discuss the Field Experience program
Students must update their record with Counseling and Career Services each semester in order for their resume to be forwarded to employers offering internships. If you no longer want your resume referred to employers, you should contact Cynthia Jackson in Counseling and Career Services.
Grading and Course Requirements
- By mid-semester, submit a internship progress report to Dr. Ann Jennings (1045-South or
jenningsa@uhd.edu).
- Submit a final internship report to Dr. Ann Jennings before the last class day of the semester
- Include in the final report a log recording the 120 hours required for the internship.
Progress Report (midterm)
The midterm report (in letter or memo form) describes the work the student has been performing and tasks completed in the internship, including any problems or concerns about the internship.
Final Internship Report
Students should submit in their final internship report:
- A brief (500- to 1500-word) report about the experience of your internship.
- Attached samples of written work that was produced or edited during the internship. If it is not possible to attach work samples, the report must compensate by describing in detail the documents on which you worked.
In the report students should demonstrate their knowledge of writing and formatting informal reports. The report might discuss any combination of the following topics:
1. Describe the project as you first envisioned it.
2. Describe the project as it actually turned out, including a list of the work you accomplished.
3. Analyze what you learned: consider how (or whether) your previous work in the Professional Writing program prepared you for the internship; identify any gaps in your preparation that the PW program might have filled.
4. Advise anyone considering undertaking a similar project.
Satisfactory completion of the course is signified by a grade of "S."
Students unable to complete the required internship hours or duties within the semester should inform Dr. Ann Jennings, the Professional Writing Field Experience Coordinator, before the end of the semester.
