The Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE)

All students must take and pass the Writing Proficiency Examination after completing 60 semester credit hours and before completing 75 semester credit hours. Transfer students with 75 or more hours must attempt the examination during their first semester at the university.

To register for the exam in Student E-Services, click on My Payment. After you submit the $10 fee, you will be able to register for one of the available test times.

Further information about the WPE is available through the Writing and Reading Center at Testing Services website. The purposes of the examination are to determine if students have retained the language skills learned in their lower-division composition courses, and to ensure that students proceeding to upper-division work possess college-level writing skills.

Degree Waivers & Residency Requirements

Students who seek to waive any degree requirements must go to the CHSS Advising Center in 1001-S to meet with an advisor and petition for a degree waiver. For degree completion, at least 18 upper level hours and the final 30 hours of the degree must be completed at UHD. Any variation from these requirements must be approved by the Assistant or Associate Dean before you register for a course at another institution.
