Summer Internship 2011 Internship

Duration: June 1 – August 31

Organization Description:
The Houston Public Library (HPL) operates 35 neighborhood libraries, three HPL Express Libraries, a Central Library, the Houston Metropolitan Research Center, the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research, The African American Library at the Gregory School, and the Parent Resource Library located in the Children’s Museum of Houston. Serving more than 4 million customers per year, HPL is committed to excellent customer service and equitable access to information and programs by providing library customers with free use of a diverse collection of printed materials and electronic resources, Internet, laptop and computer use, and a variety of database and reference resources with live assistance online 24/7.

Internship Description: Want a fun internship that’ll give you real-world experience while also letting you use your writing skills to make a positive impact on the community? Look no further! The Houston Public Library seeks a Communications Intern for the Summer of 2011 to help promote library programs.

Ideal candidates should be college juniors or seniors, should be able to work a minimum of 2-3 days a week, 10-15 hours a week, and should have keen editing skills, knowledge of AP Style, boundless creativity, and the ability to create a “voice” in their writing. Experience with shooting and editing video for web is preferred. Bonus points if you’re bilingual in English and Spanish.

This position is unpaid, but you won’t spend your time organizing closets or making coffee (unless you really want some coffee). Although you may be creating clip books (cutting and taping), you will spend most of your time gaining valuable experience drafting and editing press releases, blog entries, and social media updates. You may also take event photos and videos in the Library.

The time commitment required is 2-3 days a week. Accommodations can be made to fit in class/work schedule. (2-3 days a week/ 10-15 hours)

You must submit your driving record, as there is some driving involved.
