Field Experience: Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts, HUM 4380
Field Experience is designed to give students hands-on experience in their concentration area as well giving them the opportunity to make contacts in the local fine arts community. Students who meet the following requirements can enroll for the Field Experience course and earn 3 credit hours:
- You must have completed 60 credit hours
- You must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
- You must be a declared Fine Arts major at the University of Houston-Downtown
- You must have earned a minimum of 6 hours at the University of Houston-Downtown
You must complete 120 hours at your internship institution over the course of the semester. The Degree Coordinator will follow up with your on-site supervisor to ensure that your hours are completed satisfactorily.
Steps for Applying for Field Experience:
1. Find an Internship
- Meet with the Degree Coordinator about possible internship opportunities, several Houston fine arts institutions have expressed an interest in obtaining UHD interns.
- Obtain your own internship. Research local institutions and contact them about internship opportunities. Ensure that the institution you choose to intern with will fulfill your needs and fits into your long-term career goals. Internships can be paid or gratis, but you cannot intern with an institution in a position you have already held.
- Visit the Career Center to learn about job and internship postings. Suite 340-N, (713) 221-8980
2. Seek Approval from the Degree Coordinator. Azar Rejaie, Room 1081-South, 713-222-530
- Your internship will be approved if:
- It is of sufficient benefit to your degree program and future goals
- It will provide you with a professional fine arts environment in which to work
- You are not working for relatives or working in a position you have held before for this particular institution
- It will utilize several of the skill sets learned while completing the degree
3. Complete a Field Experience Application, this can be obtained from the Career Center website
- Fill out the form completely, have your field experience on-site supervisor fill out page 2
- Obtain the signature of the Department Chair, Dr. Cueva. S-1009
- Return the form to Career Services and enroll in HUM 4380
You must meet with the Degree Coordinator at least once during the semester to discuss the progress of your internship. Upon completion of the internship submit a one-page summary and evaluation of your internship experience. The Degree Coordinator will also contact your on-site supervisor to evaluate your experience. You will be given an S (Satisfactory) grade for the course if you:
- Complete all steps of the application process
- Complete the 120 hours of work
- Meet with the Degree Coordinator during your internship
- Complete the one-page summary and evaluation of your experience
- Receive a satisfactory assessment from your on-site supervisor
