To be considered for a college/departmental scholarship(s), you must complete one College of Business scholarship application. Only one completed application is necessary for consideration of all scholarships listed above for which you qualify.

The COB scholarships will be awarded in accordance with all UHD regulations pertaining to nondiscrimination. The COB Scholarship Selection Committee will select scholarship recipients. Students with application questions should direct questions solely to the staff in the COB Dean's office. Recipients will be provided contact information in order to express their thanks and appreciation to the appropriate scholarship sponsor.

Deadline:

Applications will be accepted from January 20 to March 14, 2014, unless otherwise noted. Submission deadline is 5:00 p.m., March 14, 2014.  Please deliver completed application to the College of Business Dean’s Office, B-400 Shea Street Building.

TEXAS RETAILERS ASSOCIATION

Award

Eligibility

Three - $750 scholarships per semester. Recipients can receive this scholarship more than once and can receive this scholarship in conjunction with other scholarships.

Award Criteria:

  • Must have a minimum 2.5 overall GPA;
  • Sophmore/Junior/Senior standing;.
  • At least one academic year remaining;
  • Minor in retail management;
  • Enrolled in 6 or more credit hours; and
  • Must be pursuing a degree at UHD.

THE JAY ANDERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN EIS

Award

Eligibility

Award Criteria:

  • Must have a minimum of 1 semester of course work remaining after receipt of scholarship.
  • Must be a declared EIS major with degree plan on file.
  • Must have a minimum 2.5 overall GPA.
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in EIS courses.
  • Must have a minimum of 12 hours of completed EIS courses.
  • Must have a minimum of 30 hours at UHD.
  • Must have at least 60 hours of courses.
  • Must be currently enrolled in at least 9 hours.
  • Must be registered during term of award.
  • Deadline May 2, 2014

Lasso Scholarship

Award

Eligibility

$1,000 per year with $500 awarded for the fall and spring semesters.
Award Criteria:

  • All College of Business majors are eligible.
  • Must have a 3.0 GPA or above.
  • Must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at UHD, and a maximum of 96 credit hours.
  • Must be currently enrolled in at least 9 hours.
  • Must be registered during term of award.
  • Must have a minimum of 1 semester of course work remaining after receipt of scholarship.

Larry G. Jones Scholarship
The Deloitte Foundation

Award

Eligibility

Requirements:

  • Are enrolled in UHD full-time
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Pursue the study of an Accounting Major or
  • Are working towards a professional certification in Accounting
  • Maintain a minimum of 3.25 GPA

Application must be filled out, two reference letters, biographical statement, including financial need, and returned to FACIS department located in Shea Street Building B410.

Scholarships are renewable and shall be awarded annually to provide financial aid and assistance to undergraduate students who fulfill the criteria.

Insurance & Risk Management Scholarship

Eligibility

Requirements:

  • Must be a declared IRM major or minor
  • Must be enrolled in IRM courses
  • Must have a UHD GPA of at least 2.8

  • By acceptance of the scholarship, recipient warrants they will remain enrolled in IRM courses through the end of the semester.
  • Withdrawal from an IRM course without prior written approval of the IRM Center Director disqualifies recipient from future scholarship awards.
  • IRM scholarships may be received in conjunction with other scholarships.

    Eligibility

     

    • Scholarship prospect exhibits qualities of an entrepreneur as determined by the College of Business Scholarship Committee.
    • Scholarship applicant should be a declared major in the College of Business
    • Scholarship applicant must be certified full-time undergraduate or graduate certificate or degree-seeking student in good standing at the University of Houston-Downtown.
    • Scholarship recipient may accept other scholarships and grants in conjunction with the Charles Saunders Sr. Memorial Scholarship Committee.
    • Scholarship recipient may accept other scholarships and grants in conjunction with the Charles Saunders Sr. Memorial Scholarship in Entrepreneurship.
    • Funds may be used to cover expenses for tuition, books, fees, and/or supplies for the coming academic semester. Any expenses of a recipient in excess of the amount deposited must be borne by the student.
    Wells Fargo Scholarship
     

    Award

    Eligibility

    $1,000 Annual Scholarship per academic year.

  • Must be a declared major in any field of study in the Bachelor of Business Administration degree program.
  • Must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours at UHD
    in the COB.
  • Must be a continuing full-time degree seeking student in each
    of the two long semesters for which the scholarship was received.
  • Must be a student in good standing with GPA between 2.75
    and 3.50 for: (1) all course work attempted and (2) all course work attempted at UHD.
  • Must provide leadership potential through occupying a current leadership position or past leadership accomplishment that is verifiable.
  • Must provide a letter of support for leadership potential or accomplishments.
  • Insurance and Risk Management Industry Scholarship

    Award

    Eligibility

    To provide financial assistance for students to attend insurance and risk management industry conferences, purchase textbooks and other course materials, take professional designation exams, and participate in other activities designed to further their education and attain professional positions within the insurance and risk management industry.

     

    Requirements
  • Must be a declared IRM major
  • Must be enrolled in IRM courses
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Students must submit a proposal describing the purpose and amount of the financial assistance requested and outlining how the student expects to benefit from the financial assistance to the Director of the Insurance and Risk Management Center.

    Scholarship amounts will vary depending upon the specific proposal and the availability of funding.

    IACCGH-Gopal Savjani Scholarship/University of Houston Downtown

    Award

    Eligibility

    $1000 Annual Scholarship Awarded Fall ($500 in Fall, and $500 in Spring).

  • GPA 3.5 or higher
  • At least 30 hours of coursework earned at UHD
  • Pursuing a business degree at UHD
  • Junior/Senior standing
  • At least one academic year(two long semesters) needed to complete before anticipated graduation
  • Major or minor in the following disciplines:

    Currently receiving no scholarships from the College of Business.

    Donald Bonham Memorial Scholarship

    Award

    Eligibility

    Two scholarships at $1,000 per year with $500 awarded for the Fall and Spring semesters.

     

  • Be a Learners' Community student or a former Learners' Community student
  • Have a 2.75 GPA or above
  • Have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at UHD and a maximum of 96 credit hours
  • Agree to be co-advised in the Learners' Community and the College of Business
  • Esther Kam Engel Scholarship

    Award

    Eligibility

    One scholarship at $3,000 per year with $1,500 awarded for Fall and Spring semesters.

     

  • The award will be designed to “encourage and foster students seeking to change their lives through education”
  • The award will be given to a junior student each year.  There should be an assurance that the student will be enrolled for at least one additional academic year.
  • All College of Business majors are eligible for the scholarship.
  • Have a 3.00 GPA or above
  • Have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at UHD and a maximum of 96 credit hours
  • Have completed 9 credit hours from the following list of 6 courses: MATH 1305, MATH 1306, ACCT 2301, ACCT 2302, ECON 2301, and ECON 2302

  • Dr. Asghar Nazemzadeh Memorial Scholarship

    Award

    Eligibility

    One scholarship at $500 per year with $250 awarded for the Fall and Spring semesters.

     

  • An undergraduate in the Department of Finance, Accounting and Enterprise Information Systems
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 3 semester credit hours at UHD
  • GPA of 3.5 at UHD
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • May receive the scholarship more than once and may also accept other scholarships and grants
  • American Women's Society of Certified Public Accountants Scholarship

    Award

    Eligibility

    Will award three scholarships of $2,500 each.

     

  • Be a United States Citizen;
  • Be a declared accounting student at UHD;
  • Have completed 20 hours towards a degree;
  • Have completed 12 hours of accounting;
  • submit application by May 27, 2014.
  • Candidates will be evaluated based on their academic performance, financial need, extracurricular activities and achievements, community involvement, and professional recommendations. Scholarship Letter

    Financial Executives International

    Award

    Eligibility

    For 2014, $4,000 will be awarded:

     

    • Nominee will have achieved at least a junior status.
    • Enrolled in the School of Business, majoring in Accounting or Finance.
    • Minimum grade point average of 3.5/4.0 in their major course of study and a 3.5/4.0 grade point average or better overall.
    • Active participant in campus and community service work.
    • Deserving students without significant other scholarships that can demonstrate financial need.
    • Student is a U.S. citizen.
    • A graduation date beyond May 2014.
    • Attendance at the Scholarship Award Ceremony in February 2014.

    To be considered for nomination for this year’s scholarship from Financial Executives International, candidate will need to be approved by the School's Development Office and will need to complete the Nomination Form and to return it no later than November 22, 2013.

    Houston CPA Society

    Award

    Eligibility

    Award Criteria:

     

    • The student demonstrates an intent to become a Texas Certified Public Accountant and enter the accounting profession upon graduation.
    • The student shall  have demonstrated financial need, superior ethics, citizenship, and high scholastic achievement on campus based on the judgment of accounting faculty. 
    • The student has a GPA of at least 3.25 in accounting and 3.0 overall and preference being given to students entering their 5th year in the accounting program.
    • The student has taken a minimum of 12 hours in accounting courses.
    • The student has declared accounting as his or her major
    • The student is considered a full-time student (at least 12 hours per semester if an undergraduate and 9 hours per semester if a graduate student).
    • If a student is not full-time and is taking a reduced course load, the student may still qualify, if during the semester that eligibility is determined, the student is in an internship program of at least 20 hours per week doing accounting related work. (However, special circumstances should be considered on a case-by-case basis where there is a reduced course load.)
    • The student must be planning to continue their education at your institution subsequent to the Spring 2014 semester.
    • Preference to be given to candidates who have not previously received a Houston CPA Society Scholarship unless there is a compelling reason for a second scholarship.

    Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants

    Award

    Eligibility

    Award Criteria:

     

    The Accounting Education Foundation of the Texas Society of CPAs will provide accounting scholarships of $1,500 each to college seniors who are majoring in accounting and plan to become Texas CPAs.  Each scholarship will be renewable for one additional year if certain minimum requirements are met.  The Foundation Trustees feel that this program will lend support to attracting and retaining the best students to the accounting profession in Texas.

    A committee of Foundation Trustees will select recipients.  You must have your Department Chair or Dean sign your application, as incomplete applications will not be considered.

    Transportation Club of Houston

    Award

    Eligibility

    Award Criteria:

     

    • Completed Application
    • Certified copy of transcripts
    • Written essay
    • Active participant in community service.
    • TCH scholarships may be awarded on an annual basis.
    • TCH scholarships will be awarded to students in transportation and related fields such as warehousing, supply chain logistics and international business and logistics.
    • Students are eligible at the start of the second semester level of their freshman year.

    Fifth Year Accounting Scholarship

    Award

    Eligibility

    Award: Minimum Award  $1,500  (Fall $750/Spring$750)
    Maximum Award $10,000   (Fall $5,000/Spring $5,000)
    Based on Financial Aid need, which is determined by submitting a FAFSA.

     

    • Resident of Texas; 
    • Enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credit hours or more);
    • Satisfactory academic progress in the student’s program of study and meets the scholastic ability and performance standards as measured in the cumulative grade point average; not less than a 2.0 GPA
    • A cumulative grade point average that is equal to or greater than the grade point average required for graduation (equal to or greater than a 2.0);
    • Completed at least 120 credit hours of college work, including at least 15 hours of upper level accounting;
    • Not more than 30 semester hours of college coursework yet to be completed to meet the following education requirements:
      • 150 semester hours of college credit
      • 30 semester hours of upper level accounting courses
      • 24 semester hours of upper level business courses
      • 3 semester hours of a Board-approved ethics course
    • Student has not received this award in a prior year; and
    • Not taken the CPA examination in Texas or another jurisdiction.

    Step 1
    Must demonstrate financial need by completing the 2012-2013 FASFA and submitting a valid SAR to UHD by deadline, must have financial aid need of at least $1,500 to qualify


    Step 2
    Submit an Application of Intent to take the CPA examination to the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (applications cannot be considered until a copy of the Acknowledgement from TSBPA is submitted to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for review, TSBA’s web link to access the Application of Intent, http://www.tsbpa.state.tx.us/exam-qualification/applications-application-of-intent.html


    Step 3
    Submit an Application for the Fifth-year Accounting Student Scholarship Program to the College of Business Administrator to complete Section 2.


    Step  4
    Submit a copy of your Acknowledgement Notice from the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, including your Application after Sections 1 and 2 have been completed by you and the COB to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

    International Cultural Exchange Scholarship

    Award

    Eligibility

    $1,000 per academic year.
    Award Criteria:

    • Must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a College of Business degree program, and in good standing.
    • Must have transferred from a college in the Lone Star College System.
    • Must be or have been affiliated with the International Cultural Exchange (ICx) as attested to by a representative of ICx.
    Retail Management Scholarships

    Award

    Eligibility

    $750 per academic year.
    Award Criteria:

    • Four scholarships for new students coming to UHD and interested in retail management.

    Walmart Scholarship

    Award

    Eligibility

    $750 per academic year. 20 Walmart Scholarships available for students transferring to UHD from a community college and minoring in retail management.
    Award Criteria:

    • Must have a minimum 2.5 overall GPA;
    •  Freshman,/Sophmore standing;.
    • At least one academic year remaining;
    • Minor in retail management;
    • Enrolled in 6 or more credit hours; and
    • Must be pursuing a degree at UHD.

    Grocers Supply Operations Scholarship Program

    Award

    Eligibility

    $750 per semester and can be awarded for up to 2 consecutive semesters at the time of selection.
    Scholarship requirements:

    • Minimum GPA 2.50 
    • Declared  related degree at UHD in Supply Chain Management, Marketing, Management, or General Business
    • Earned at least 60 hours credit
    • At least 20 required credits remaining 
    • Enrolled in a minimum of 12 course hours
    • Must have a minimum of 2 years work experience (any type that can be verified) prior to submitting
    • Must be available to work in a paid part-time position-16 to 20 hours per week-in a position that will provide relevant experience (class schedules will be accommodated) during the semester(s) scholarship is provided.  Pay rate will be $20.00-$24.00 per hour depending on qualifications
    • Able to provide proof of eligibility for employment in the U.S. if selected for scholarship

     

    Recipients may apply for this scholarship more than once and can receive this scholarship in conjunction with other scholarships.

    Scholarship Application and Selection Process:


    Applications for the Fall Semester must be received no later than July 1, 2013
    Applications for the Spring Semester must be received no later than November 29, 2013

     

    Application packet to be submitted to Tracy Davis, Director, Center for Retail Management, University of Houston Downtown.  Documents may be submitted via email attachments to davisjam@uhd.edu or delivered to 320 North Main Street Houston, Texas 77002, Suite B-446 (UHD College of Business) Required Documents include:

    • Complete attached scholarship application and company application.
    • Attach copy of Transcript through completed semesters and provide a list of courses in progress.
    • Two letters of Reference, preferably from previous supervisor or teacher from a previous class.
    • Write or Type (must be easy to read) a brief essay explaining your academic and career goals-no more than 300 words. 

     

    All applications received will be evaluated for relevance to our company and industry.  Top candidates (up to 4 candidates) will be scheduled for a panel interview.  Interviews are expected to take place:

    • During the week of December 9th (for the Spring Semester)
    • During the week of July 8th (for the fall semester)

     

    Up to 2 candidates may be selected to receive the scholarship.  If no appropriate candidate is identified, the company is not obligated to award a scholarship.  The number of scholarships to be awarded will be evaluated annually.

    • Academic or other relevant achievements
    • Alignment of applicant’s personal career goals and the needs of our company

    Selected Candidates who are awarded the scholarship and part-time position must be willing to complete a company job application, satisfactorily complete a post-offer drug test, and criminal background check. 

    Retirement Security Fellowship Program

    Award

    Eligibility

    The Retirement Security Fellowship Program is made possible through joint funding from Department of Education and the Social Security Administration. The purpose is to increase UHD’s research capacity by creating opportunities for funded research in the area of financial literacy and financial decision making. Grant funds will support graduate students in the UHD Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. Specifically, the grant enables students to pursue their educational goals full-time, while receiving high-quality research training that will expand the pool of talented researchers in the areas of retirement security, financial literacy, and financial decision-making. Retirement Security Fellowships will be provided to students who demonstrate a track record of academic excellence and who show clear promise of research acumen.

    Award Criteria:

    • A 2-3 page original personal statement. The personal statement is a critical component of the fellowship selection process.  Use your personal statement as an opportunity to describe your previous academic and professional accomplishments, discuss your research interests and if applicable previous research experience. Your personal statement should discuss how your graduate career will influence your professional development.
    • Two professional letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters must be submitted directly to the University of Houston – Downtown. The letters can be from your academic advisors or other colleagues who know you and your work well.  It is preferable to have at least one recommendation letter from an academician.
    • A copy of your undergraduate (and graduate if applicable) transcripts (cumulative/major GPA)
    • A current resume or curriculum vitae, including relevant work and volunteer experience.

    THE ALESCO GROUP SCHOLARSHIP

    Award

    Eligibility

    Two $1,000 scholarships per year will be awarded to support mothers who are changing their lives through education.


    Award Criteria:

    • Be a United States Citizen
    • Be a Female Student with Children
    • Declared Major in the College of Business
    • Achieved Junior status
    • Minimum GPA of 2.5
    • Completion of The Alesco Group Scholarship Application
    • Completion of one-page description that includes a brief background and career/business plans after graduation.
