Accounting graduates have flexibility in career choice since there are more than 15 areas of specialization. The program may lead to a career in public accounting or in the accounting functions of other types of businesses. Because of the scope of accounting and its breadth of application, majors may find opportunities in various agencies of the federal government, such as the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as in state and municipal agencies. Accounting serves as an excellent background for those who plan careers in tax and corporate law.

The accounting program is designed to prepare students to pass all areas of the Certified Public Accountant examination. For students preparing for the Certificate in Management Accounting, certain courses are recommended as electives. Accounting majors must take ACC 3304 in place of CIS 3302.

The Texas Public Accountancy Act of 1991 requires that a CPA candidate sitting in Texas for the CPA exam for the first time as of May, 1998, have (1) a baccalaureate degree (any major), (2) basic accounting courses plus an additional 30 hours of accounting, (3) 20 hours of business-related courses, and (4) a total of 150 unduplicated college transcript hours. If the candidate meets requirements (1), (2), and (3), he or she may sit for the CPA exam and must complete the 150 hours requirement by December 31, 1999, in order to become certified. The candidate is NOT required to complete a master’s degree.

Contact the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (512) 505-5599 for clarification of part-time student exemptions and the 150 hour grace period.
