Center for Entrepreneurship

The Entrepreneurship program continues to develop and implement courses that build from content and exposure to real world situations. We train our students to develop new business opportunities, weather working for existing organizations or in new start-ups. With this in mind we have created a two course sequence plus we have added and will continue to add courses as needed to maximize student learning.

The first course, An Introduction to Entrepreneurship, is designed to help students learn how to explore entrepreneurial opportunities, generate ideas for potential businesses and to determine the feasibility of their concepts. Getting students to carefully and analytically consider business opportunities they might like to be involved with are valuable learning experiences.

The second course Intrapreneurship allows students to hear perspectives of the professionals who are a part of a business owner’s team as well as successful entrepreneurs and investors. Speakers include lawyers, accountants, public relations consultants, bankers, investors and owners of ongoing businesses. Teams of students prepare and present business and marketing plans, plus sales forecasts, for a local business to a panel of local entrepreneurs. This semester long exercise ensures that students understand how to research, think through, communicate and make a case for a viable business concept and execution strategy to potential investors.

The view that education is something that occurs exclusively between the ages 6 and 22 is obsolete. Today individuals from all ages and walks of life seek formal instruction at multiple points during their career.  Most institutional arrangements for lifelong education are woefully inadequate. At UHD in general and the Entrepreneurship Program in particular, our goal is to fill the unmet needs of the local entrepreneurs, both future and current  for meaningful, lifelong learning opportunities.
