The College of Business (COB) at the University of Houston-Downtown's strategic advantage over other universities is our reality-based, student-centered business education. It is a business curriculum which combines discovery of theory with illustration of practical applications to solve actual problems, and is delivered by a faculty committed to combining terminal degree study and research on cutting-edge advances in both theory and practice. Our faculty, by working in full-time positions in industry, or by serving as expert consultants, prepare graduates for the changing realities of the hyper-competitive, global marketplace. As a result, COB graduates have a competitive advantage in becoming the future business leaders of the Texas Gulf Coast region.

The College of Business offers many avenues for students to enrich their learning experience, including: international study-abroad trips (our most recent trip was to Singapore, and our next planned trip is to Panama in May 2013); meaningful internships and work opportunities related to your field of interest; active student organizations which provide leadership and networking opportunities; and the Executive Speaker Series, which brings industry experts to campus to talk with students and faculty. The College of Business also houses several institutes and centers of study: the Center for Entrepreneurship; Center for Ethics; Center for Supply Chain Management; Insurance & Risk Management Center; and our newest, the Center for Retail Management

We are accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools
of Business, AACSB-International, the premier professional accrediting
body for business programs. Only the top 15 percent of the world’s business schools are accredited by AACSB-International, placing the UHD College of Business among the elite business programs in the world. We have met AACSB-International’s strict adherence to rigorous standards in our curriculum and faculty, as well as its emphasis on continuous improvement ever since our initial accreditation in 1994.

About College of Business

The College of Business is situated in downtown Houston (One Main Street) in a 150,000 square foot building that opened in August 2007 at a cost of $35 million. The facility contains a technology commons with full electronic support for students, including laptop computer checkout and ample gathering space for students to casually network or work together on team projects. A 600-space parking garage is attached, so downtown parking is not a problem.

Our downtown location and close proximity to the Port of Houston (the busiest port in the United States in terms of foreign tonnage, second-busiest in the United States in terms of overall tonnage, and tenth-busiest in the world), provides ready access to Houston’s 22 corporate headquarters of Fortune 500 companies -- second only to New York’s 45. The Greater Houston Partnership has a strategic goal of “helping create an additional 600,000 jobs in the next 10 years.” The additional jobs will be in the industry clusters of biotechnology, aerospace and aviation, energy and petrochemicals, health care, information technology and nanotechnology. All require a highly-educated workforce lead by an equally highly-educated and skilled management. The College of Business, already the second largest provider of business graduates to Houston’s progressive, forward-thinking, vibrant, and growing economy, is uniquely positioned to meet the future industry needs of greater Houston.
