Singer-Songwriter Theo Lawrence Will Serenade Downtown May 9

French Twist on Texas Tunes

See Theo Lawrence Live at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 9

Bordeaux, France, is a place known for wine, wine, and wine, so you could be forgiven if you are surprised to learn that Theo Theo Lawrence, Cherie album cover Lawrence, the country music singer-songwriter headlining the second week of UHD’s Thursday Night Concert Series at Discovery Green, hails from the world’s wine capital.

The French-Canadian is now based in Austin and, as you might expect, incorporates the classic country sound of that town, along with honky-tonk and Texas dance, all delivered, according to Strada Music, “with a croon straight out of Charlie Rich or Ray Price’s golden years.”

His latest album, Chérie (roughly equivalent to "darling" in English), has earned praise from all corners of the critical world. The website savingcountrymusic.com wrote that the sounds of the album are exquisite, “but the magic is completely born from the voice of Theo Lawrence, and the songs he has crafted to compliment it.”

Opening for Lawrence on May 9 are Kalu & The Electric Joint, as well as The Creeps. Kalu & the Electric Joint combines psychedelic soul music with the beat of rock and roll and the ancient rhythms of Africa. Billboard describes their sound as “blending both West African and American brands of funk with bluesy grit and psychedelic ambience, along with a chin-out attitude.”

The Creeps draw inspiration from grunge, rock and heavy metal, blending these genres to create an energetic and thunderous sound.

Guests are welcome to bring blankets, camping chairs and snacks. Please leave alcohol and glass containers at home. Food, beer and wine are available for purchase at The Lake House at Discovery Green.
